Today is the 10th anniversary of the Mirsarai tragedy in Chittagong. That heartbreaking incident still haunts the minds of the people of Mirsarai. Even though 10 years have passed since this incident, the memory has not been erased to such an extent. The mourning of the bereaved people of 11 villages did not stop. Every year various programs are held on the occasion of Mirsarai tragedy. But this year the program will be briefly observed due to coronavirus.

Kabir Nizami, chairman of the Mayani Union Parishad of the upazila, said the Mirsarai tragedy would be briefly observed this year due to the outbreak of coronavirus. This morning, prayers will be offered in memory of the victims according to their respective religious rites, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the memorial 'Abeg' and 'Antim' in memory of the students.

Incidentally, on July 11, 2011, after the final match of the Bangabandhu Gold Cup Football Tournament from Mirsarai Stadium, the players and supporters of both the winning and losing teams were going to Abutorab area in a mini truck. The mini truck with 60-70 students overturned in a pond in Saidali area of ​​Baratakia-Abutorab road. One by one the corpses came up from the sinking water. Locals had to count 45 deaths till the death of Nayan Shil on November 24, 2011 at 9 pm. The highest number of students were killed at Abutorab Multipurpose High School. 34 students lost their lives from that educational institution.
