Homebound folks continued to gather at the Shimulia ferry terminal in Munshiganj on Thursday, due to the fact that the 14-day strict restrictions were relaxed today.

Homebound passengers gathered at Shimulia ferry ghat ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, fearing Covid-19 infection as the death toll rose. They've been paying extra for alternate modes of transportation to get to the terminal.

Microbuses, private automobiles, and motorcycles, in addition to trucks, ambulances, and emergency services, are crossing the Padma on ferries without complying with the BIWTC notification.

Md Sirajul Kabir, in-charge of the Mawa Naval Police Station, said that as Eid approaches, the gathering at Shimulia is growing. Despite the installation of checkpoints with rigorous procedures, police are unable to keep commuters away.

Meanwhile, launches and trawlers will begin operating on this route as of today (Thursday). Authorities are working tirelessly to ensure that those who are unable to leave their homes can safely cross the Padma.
