DGHS Recommends Extending Lockdown beyond August 5

The health department has recommended extending the ongoing lockdown due to the worsening Covid situation in the country. 

The ongoing lockdown is scheduled to end on August 5 at midnight.

Dr ABM Khurshid Alam, director general of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Friday confirmed the matter to the media.  

The public administration ministry will make the decision on the matter, he said.

There will be no problem with vaccination drives amid the lockdown, he said adding that there is a plan to vaccinate one crore people every month.

The ongoing lockdown started on July 23 and is scheduled to end on August 5 at midnight.

A government-announced nationwide weeklong strict lockdown came into effect on July 1. Later, the lockdown was extended until July 14.

On July 13, the government decided to relax the lockdown restrictions from July 15 to July 22 due to Eid-ul-Azha.

Bangladesh on Thursday reported 239 more deaths from Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, taking the death tally to 20,255 in the country. On the same day, 15,271 fresh cases were detected, taking the total cases to 1,226,253.

The country registered the highest single-daily infections - 16,230 positive cases - on Wednesday.
