10 Truck Arms Case Convict Brig Rahim Dies Of Covid-19

Brigadier (retd) Abdur Rahim, a convict in the 10-truck arms case in Chattogram, died of Covid-19 at a hospital in Dhaka Sunday morning.  

He breathed his last around 8:15 am on Sunday while undergoing treatment at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital (SSMCH), reports media.

Inspector General of Prisons (IG-Prison) Brigadier General Md Mominur Rahman Mamun confirmed the matter.

The body of the deceased was kept in the hospital morgue, he added.

A few days ago, the accused was admitted to SSMCH after being tested Covid-19 positive in Kashimpur Central Jail-2. Later, he was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital as his condition worsened where he died, the IG-Prison said.

On April 1, 2004, a consignment of 10 trucks of weapons was seized from the CUFL jetty. Two cases were filed over the incident with Karnafuli police station alleging smuggling of firearms under the Arms Act of 1878 and the Special Powers Act of 1974.

On January 30, 2014, the court sentenced 14 people to death, including former industries minister and Jamaat-e-Islami chief Matiur Rahman Nizami, former state minister for home Lutfuzzaman Babar and former Director of National Security Intelligence (NSI) Brig Abdur Rahim. Besides, each of them was fined Tk 5,00,000.

They were also sentenced to life imprisonment and seven years in prison under two sections of the arms seizure case.

There were 52 accused in the arms smuggling case where the court exonerated 38 of them.
