The Flood Forecasting and Warning Center has warned
that the flood situation in eight districts of the country may deteriorate. The
districts are Kurigram, Sirajganj, Pabna, Kushtia, Manikganj, Rajbari, Faridpur
and Shariatpur.
The message from the Flood Forecasting and Warning
Center said that in these eight districts, rising water levels in the low-lying
areas could inundate new areas. The water level at Sirajganj point of Jamuna
river and Elasin point of Dhaleshwari river at Tangail may cross the danger
line by today.
Officials in charge of flood monitoring said that the
accumulated water from the upper reaches has been washed away and now the
downstream area is coming towards Bangladesh. Water is rising rapidly,
especially in the Ganges-Padma and Brahmaputra basins. The company expects the
water level to rise further in the next one week.
The Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rains
in most parts of the country in the next two days. Due to low pressure in the
Bay of Bengal, the monsoon winds are a bit weak and the rainfall has decreased.
Now that the monsoon has become active again, the rainfall may increase.
Meteorologist AKM Nazmul Alam said, "The rainfall
is reduced in August. However, as there are less clouds in the sky, the sun is
rising and the temperature is rising. In the next couple of days, both clouds
and rain may increase."
