The
Quick Enhancement of Electricity and Energy Supply (Special Provision) Act of
2021 was passed in Jatiya Sangsad, with the goal of extending it for another five
years, until 2026.
Nasrul
Hamid, the State Minister for Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources, introduced
the Bill, which was passed by voice vote on Thursday.
In
2021, the current law's term will come to an end.
The
cabinet approved the draft of the Quick Enhancement of Electricity and Energy
Supply (Special Provision) (Amendment) Bill, 2021 on September 6 in order to
ensure an uninterrupted supply of electricity and energy in order for
Bangladesh to become a higher middle-income country by 2030 and a developed
country by 2041.
According
to Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam, the extension will provide
uninterrupted power supply as Bangladesh strives to become a higher-middle
income country by 2030 and a developed nation by 2040.
The
law, which was passed in 2010, was extended for the final time, this time for
three years, until 2021.
The
government began signing arrangements for the rental of power plants for up to
16 years after the Awami League regained power in 2009. A law was made to make
the plants legitimate.
Although
the government sees the plants as important for maintaining economic dynamism
by increasing power supply, subsidies to cover the high cost of electricity
generated by the plants have been criticized.
