To protect Ilish with eggs, a 22-day prohibition on catching, selling, hoarding, and transporting Ilish will go into force on October 4th.

According to a handout issued by the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock on Wednesday, the ban will be in effect until October 25.

This is the time of year when marine fish swim upstream against the current to spawn in rivers.

According to the government, Ilish contributes the most to the country's fish production. It accounts for around 12.09 percent of the country's total fish production.

Bangladesh produces the most Ilish in the world, accounting for more than 80% of the total.

Bangladesh's Ilish output has increased by 159.76 percent in the previous 15 years, mainly to government efforts such as a restriction on fishing brood fish and fries.

During the months of March and April, the government also prohibits the capture of Ilish fry in order to aid their growth and return to the sea.

Ilish output increased from 300,000 tons in 2008-09 to 500,000 tons in 2017-18, according to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock.

In the previous fiscal year, 550,000 tons of Ilish were caught in the country, with the districts of the Barishal division accounting for 66% of the total.
