In a case filed over the custodial murder of Raihan Ahmed at Bandarbazar police outpost in Sylhet, a Sylhet court accepted a chargesheet against suspended Sub-Inspector (SI) Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan and seven others.

The court also issued an arrest order for Abdullah Al Noman, a fugitive accused journalist who is a relative of officer Akbar Hossain.

Judge Abul Momen of the Sylhet Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court issued the order on Thursday after accepting the chargesheet.

Sub Inspector Md Hasan Uddin, Assistant Sub-Inspector Ashek Elahi, Constable Md Haroon-ur-Rashid, Titu Chandra Das, and Journalist Abdullah Al Noman are among the others charged.

The chargesheet was submitted on May 5 by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), alleging suspended sub-inspector Akbar Hossain, five police officers, and a journalist.

Raihan Ahmed, a young man from Akharia in Sylhet city, was allegedly beaten to death in police detention on October 11 last year, according to his relatives.

The victim's wife, Tahmina Akter Tanni, filed a report with Kotwali Police Station the next day, accusing unidentified people of murder.

Four policeman, including the then-in-charge of Bandarbazar Police outpost Akbar, were suspended on October 12.

The case was transferred to the PBI the same day after three police officers, including Akbar, were withdrawn.
