Erosion Takes Serious Turn as Teesta Water Recedes || Photo: Collected
In just one day, the water of Teesta rose and crossed the
danger line. The Teesta Barrage Flood Bypass Dam, Kakina-Rangpur Bypass Road
and several local roads were damaged. The local communication and power system
became disconnected.
At 8 am on Thursday (October 21), water was flowing 30 cm
below the danger level at Dowani Barrage Point, said water meter man Ruhul
Islam.
The Water Development Board, Dimla, said the Teesta water
flow suddenly increased on Wednesday (October 20). The water flow was
recorded on that day at 80 cm above the danger level. In other words, the water
level stood at 53.30 meters. The danger level of water flow at Teesta Dowani
Barrage Point was 52.70 meters and the previous record was 53.15 meters.
Wednesday's water flow surpassed all past records.
A red alert was also issued due to the rising waters of the
Teesta. At the same time, emergency relief assistance was allocated by the
district administration. Water Development Board, Upazila Administration SP (B
Circle) and Thana Police team visited the flood affected areas. Lalmonirhat
Deputy Commissioner Abu Jafar and Rangpur's Gangachara constituency MP Mashiur
Rahman Ranga inspected the Mahipur-Rangpur road at 1am on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, it has been seen on the ground that early maize,
ripe paddy, early varieties of spices and vegetables have been submerged. Some
ponds have also been washed away.
Deputy Commissioner Abu Zafar said, we have visited the flood-affected areas. Union councils have been instructed. Emergency boats have been provided in the floodplains in the lower reaches. We have made all preparations to deal with any emergency.
