The government
has published the list of holidays for 2021. The list was released by the
Ministry of Public Administration on Sunday (October 31st) after cabinet
approval.
Next year
there will be a 22-day holiday combining general and executive orders. Of
these, 7 days are weekly holidays, Friday and Saturday.
Last Thursday
(November 26), the cabinet meeting approved the list of holidays for 2022.
General
holiday
General
holidays include Language Martyrs' Day and International Mother Language Day on
February 21, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's birthday
on March 17, Independence and National Day on March 26, Jumatul Bida on April
29, May Day on May 1, Eid-ul-Fitr on May 3 and Buddhapurnima (Baishakhi Purnima)
on May 15, Eid-ul-Azha on July 10, National Mourning Day on August 15,
Janmashtami on August 18, Durga Puja (Vijaya Dashami) October 5, Eid
Miladunnabi (PBUH) October 9, Victory Day on December 16 and Birthday of Jesus
Christ (Christmas) on December 25.
Leave on the executive order
There will be
holidays on 19th March next year, 14th April Bengali New Year, 29th April Shab-e
Qadr, 2nd and 4th May before and after Eid-ul-Fitr, 9th and 11th July before
and after Eid-ul-Azha and 9th August Ashura.
Optional leave
Optional
holidays (Muslim period) include Shab-e Meraj on March 1, the third day of
Eid-ul-Fitr on May 5, the third day of Eid-ul-Azha on July 12, Akhari Chahar
Somba on September 21 and Fateha-i-Yazdaham on November 7.
The optional
holidays of the Hindu festival include Saraswati Puja on 5 February, Shivaratri
Brata on 1 March, Dolayatra on 18 March, Advent of Harichand Tagore on 30
April, Mahalaya on 25 September, Durga Puja (Nabami) on 4 October, Lakshmi Puja
on 9 October and Shyama Puja on 24 October.
In addition,
January 1 is the English New Year, March 2 is Ash Wednesday, April 14 is Holy
Thursday, April 15 is Holy Friday, April 16 is Holy Saturday, April 17 is
Easter Sunday, and December 24 and 26 (the day before and after Christmas).
Optional
holidays (Buddhist festivals) include Maghi Purnima on 16 January, Chaitra
Sankranti on 13 April, Asadhi Purnima on 12 July, Madhu Purnima on 9 September
(Bhadra Purnima) and Pravarana Purnima (Ashwini Purnima) on 9 October.
Optional
holidays for employees belonging to small ethnic groups working in and outside
the CHT include April 12 and 15 in Vaisabi and similar social festivals for
other small ethnic groups in the CHT.
The leave
order states that an employee may be allowed to enjoy a maximum of 3 days of
optional leave per year according to his / her religion. Each employee must
obtain prior approval from the appropriate authority to enjoy 3 days of
optional leave as per his / her religion at the beginning of the year. General
leave, executive order may be allowed to enjoy optional leave in conjunction
with public leave and weekly leave.
In the case of offices whose schedules and holidays are regulated by their own laws or whose jobs have been declared as essential by the government, the concerned offices, agencies and institutions shall exercise such leave considering the public interest in accordance with their own laws and regulations.
