During
this time of the Covid-19 Pandemic, 3 crore 24 lakh people have become poor in
Bangladesh. Of these, 79 lakh people have become poor in the last six months.
This number of the poor has increased since the lockdown from April this year.
The
data came from a joint survey by the BRAC Institute of Governance and
Development (BIGD) and the Power and Participation Research Center (PPRC). The
results of a survey titled 'Effects of Covid-19 on Livelihoods, Adaptation and
Passage' were released on Thursday.
According
to the survey, 3 crore 24 lakh people have become poor in the country during
the entire coronation period. In March this year, the number of new poor was
24.5 million. In other words, 79 lakh people have become poor in the last six
months.
The
BIGD and PPRC conducted a four-phase survey on the impact on people's lives and
livelihoods during the Corona period. The first phase of the survey was
conducted in April last year. Then in June of that year in the second phase, in
the third phase in June of this year and the last survey was conducted from
21st August to 8th September. 4872 families took part in the survey. Of these,
54 per cent were in urban areas, 45 per cent in rural areas and one per cent in
the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
