Transport strike is going on in
the country due to rising fuel prices. On Friday morning, several organizations
of owners and workers of the transport sector announced the closure of
passenger and freight vehicles. The transport strike has affected the daily
commodity market. As a result, the buyer has to suffer while walking on the
road and has to pay high prices for shopping.
On Saturday (November 6), it
was seen that the price of vegetables has gone up by Tk 10 to 20 per variety.
Beans, tomatoes and green chillies are being sold at the highest prices at Tk 140
to Tk 150, Tk 120 to Tk 125 and Tk 150 to Tk 160 respectively.
Cauliflower and Cabbage Tk 40-60,
Arum-lobe Tk 55-60 rupees per kg, Sponge gourd Tk 70, Snake gourd Tk 60, Radish
Tk 60, Cucumber Tk 40-50, Eggplant Tk 60-70, Potatoes Tk 60-70, Beans Tk 140-
150, Green papaya Tk 30-40 and pumpkin Tk 50-60 depending on the size.
Besides, tomatoes are being
sold at Tk 120 per kg, carrots at Tk 100, green chillies at Tk 150-160 and
potatoes at Tk 28-30 per kg.
On the other hand, local onion
is being sold at Tk 60, garlic at Tk 130-140 and ginger at Tk 130-140. Eggs are
being sold at Tk 115-120 per dozen.
Akbar Mia, a vegetable seller
in the capital's Karwan Bazar, said there was no shortage of vegetables in the
market although prices were not falling. The transport strike has started
again. Prices are rising from time to time. If the wholesale price is high, it
will also affect the retail market.
Besides, broiler chickens are
being sold at Tk 160-165 per kg, golden cock chickens at Tk 280-300 per kg and local
chickens at Tk 400-450 per kg.
"Lower-middle class people
like us are in dire straits," said a buyer at Hatirpul Bazaar. The price
of any product in the market is not right. The government has no control. This
time the strike has been added. It is becoming difficult to survive.
