Govt Admits That Rape and Violence against Women Increased

Compared to the last fiscal year, the rate of rape and violence against women has increased in the country till June 30, 2020-21. Compared to the previous fiscal year, there have been more cases in this regard. However, overall, the number of cases has decreased by more than 91 thousand at this time. This information has come from the annual report on the functions of the ministries and departments.

The report was raised at a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday (November 22nd).

Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam gave this information in a briefing held in the cabinet room of the secretariat after the meeting.

In the briefing, the Cabinet Secretary highlighted the significant data of the annual report for the fiscal year 2020-21 and said, "The total number of cases in the last fiscal year was 6 lakh 61 thousand. At the end of the current fiscal year, it is seen that 5 lakh 69 thousand 362 cases have been registered. The number of cases has decreased by about 91,000.

The cabinet secretary said there were 336 cases of robbery in the last fiscal year; this year 321, 15 decreased. There were 919 cases of robbery, this year it has increased to 1,048. There were 2,617 cases under the Arms Act, 1,747 this year. There were 3,485 murder cases, 3,458 this year.

Khandaker Anwarul Islam said, "There were 5,842 rape cases in the last fiscal year and 7,222 this year." There were 12,660 cases of violence against women, this time it has increased to 14,567. In the last fiscal year, the number of rape cases has increased by 1,380 and the number of cases of violence against women has increased by 1,097.
