Sanction on RAB Officials: Foreign Ministry Summons US Ambassador

The US Ambassador to Bangladesh, Earl R Miller, has been summoned by the Foreign Ministry to explain the US human rights sanctions on Rapid Action Battalion and seven current and former top officials of the agency, including Benazir Ahmed, the current Inspector General of Police.

"The US Ambassador was summoned by the Foreign Secretary this morning and asked for an explanation on the sanctions," a foreign ministry source confirmed to the media.

On the other hand, Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital said that the ban on seven former and current RAB officers was unfortunate.

On Friday (December 10), International Human Rights Day, the United States announced sanctions against 15 individuals and 10 organizations in various countries. The list of sanctions also includes the names of six former and current officers of the RAB and Bangladesh Special Forces.

The list also includes former RAB director general and current IGP Dr Benazir Ahmed and current RAB director general Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun.
