Three
ministers have been tasked with overseeing US sanctions on current and former
top RAB officials.
Cabinet
Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam told reporters at a briefing after the
cabinet meeting at the Secretariat on Monday (December 13th).
The
secretary was asked if the issue of US sanctions had been discussed in the
cabinet.
In
response, he said, "It has not been discussed because it is already being
handled by the Home Minister, Law Minister and Foreign Minister." So it
was not discussed.
Earlier,
the United States has said it will impose sanctions on seven current and former
RAB officers on December 10, International Human Rights Day, for alleged human
rights abuses. The country's State Department and Treasury Department have
issued separate bans.
Former
Director-General of RAB and current Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir
Ahmed, current Director-General of RAB Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, Additional
Director General (Operations) Khan Mohammad Azad, former Additional Director
General (Operations) Tofayel Mustafa Sorwar, Mohammad Jahangir Alam and Anwar
Latif Khan and former officer of the force Lieutenant Colonel Miftah Uddin
Ahmed.
