A Dhaka
court has granted a three-day remand to Iftekhar Abedin in the murder case of
Dhaka University student Ilma Chowdhury Meghla.
The Dhaka
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court passed the order on Wednesday. Dhaka
Metropolitan Police Sub-Inspector (SI) Alamgir Hossain confirmed the information
in the first light.
Sources
close to the court said that the accused Iftekhar Abedin, who was arrested in
the case, was produced in the court and remanded for seven days. The court
granted a three-day remand after hearing both sides.
Ilma was a
student of the Department of Dance at the University of Dhaka. Police arrested
her husband Iftekhar on Tuesday in connection with her untimely death. Ilma's
father Saiful Islam Chowdhury filed a murder case with Banani Police Station
today.
Iftekhar Abedin, his mother Shirin Amin and Iftekhar's foster father Mohammad Amin have been accused in the case.
Banani
Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Noor Azam Mia said Ilma was taken to United
Hospital in the capital around 4pm yesterday. She died within an hour. The
inquest found signs of injuries on various parts of Ilma's body.
According to
the case statement, Iftekhar was married to Ilma in April this year. After
the marriage, Iftekhar and his parents told Ilma to stop studying. Iftekhar
and his parents used to physically abuse Ilma because she did not want to
stop studying. After three months of marriage, Iftekhar moved to Canada.
Iftekhar
returned to Dhaka on 12 December. Iftekhar called Saiful Islam's wife's mobile
phone yesterday and said that her daughter was seriously ill. She is being
taken to a hospital in Gulshan for treatment. He told them to come.
Saiful Islam
Chowdhury alleged that he saw signs of injuries in different parts of Ilma's body.
He said in a statement that the three accused had conspired to beat Ilma to
death.
