JSD Reluctant to Propose Name for Search Committee

President Mohammad Abdul Hamid has held a dialogue with the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD-Inu) on the formation of the Election Commission (EC).

A six-member JSD delegation sat in dialogue with the President at Bangabhaban on Wednesday (December 22). At this time they made a written proposal to the President.

At the beginning of the discussion, the JSD leaders applauded the President for initiating a dialogue to get the views of the political parties on the formation of the EC. In the dialogue, the Jasad leaders conveyed their views to the President.

The Jatiya Swayamsevak Sangh (JSD) has said that it is unfortunate that no law has been enacted in this regard so far, though the constitution calls for the enactment of a specific law on the formation of election bodies. In such a situation, JSD thinks that the formation of a search committee would be an acceptable process to find suitable and skilled people.

JSD leaders hope that the President will form a search committee to find skilled people and appoint a Chief Election Commissioner (CIC) and other election commissioners.

In the opinion given to form a search committee for the formation of EC, JSD said that it is necessary to put an end to all debates about the election system by enacting specific laws including giving a definite and permanent structural form to the process of formation of the search committee.

JSD thinks that it is not appropriate to suggest the name of any person directly in the formation of the search committee. It is advisable to nominate the members of the search committee from among the persons holding constitutional positions including the judges of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, the Chairman of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (PSC), the Auditor General and the Controller.

JSD President Hasanul Haque Inu, general secretary Shirin Akhter, acting President Rabiul Alam, standing committee member Mosharraf Hossain, vice-presidents Mir Hossain Akhter and Rezaul Karim Tansen took part in the dialogue.
