Due to heavy fog, ferry services on the Paturia-Daulatdia route, one of the important routes, have been suspended to avoid accidents.
Authorities suspended ferry service on Wednesday (December
22nd) at around 12:15 pm due to increased fog in the Padma River.
Meanwhile, several hundred trucks carrying goods were
stranded at Daulatdia on the other side of the river. Drivers and passengers
are suffering in severe winter.
Mohiuddin Russel, assistant manager (commerce) at the BIWTC
Aricha office, said a ferry carrying passengers and transport was stranded in
the middle of the Padma river due to blurry light in the direction of the
ferry.
BIWTC Daulatdia Assistant Wharf Manager Khorshed Alam said
the ferry service has been suspended since 12:15 pm due to fog. When the fog
density decreases, the ferry service will start again. At present 16 ferries
are plying on this route.
According to the Rajbari District Traffic Department, a long
traffic jam has been created at Daulatdia end due to the closure of the ferry.
More than 400 buses, trucks and private cars were stranded in the
four-kilometer stretch of the Dhaka-Khulna highway from Zero Point on the ferry
terminal.
More than two to three hundred trucks carrying goods are
stuck in an area of two kilometers from Goalanda junction towards Rajbari.
