The election for the Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) finished in a jubilant spirit. Counting is now in progress.

Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) voting began at 8:00 am at 192 polling centers in 27 wards of the city and proceeded uninterrupted until 4:00 pm.

Voters hope that the major contest will be between independent candidate Taimur Alam Khandaker's Elephant sign and Awami League candidate Dr Selina Hayat Ivy's Boat symbol.

Taimur Alam has been expelled from the BNP for breaking party order by contesting the polls.

The BNP has pledged to boycott any elections held during the AL administration, claiming that elections cannot be held in a free and fair way.

After several weeks of hectic campaigns in a joyous mood, both candidates are optimistic about winning the NCC mayoral election.

Aside from the mayoral contenders, the NCC polls feature 180 additional candidates, including 148 for 27 councillor positions and 32 women for 9 reserved positions.

Ivy was re-elected mayor of NCC in 2016, campaigning with the Boat emblem. In 2011, she defeated AL heavyweight Shamim Osman to become the first NCC mayor.
