Truck Driver, Helper Held over RU Student Killing

Police arrested the driver and helper of a truck on the charge of their involvement in killing a student of Rajshahi University (RU) and injuring another at RU campus on Tuesday night.

The driver identified as Titu Mian, 42, son of Jahangir Alam was arrested from his resident at Balia village under Kasiadanga Police Station, while helper Hamim Hossain, 20, son of Gandu Hossain, from his resident Haripur village under the same police station.

RU sources said the deceased was identified as Mahmud Habib Himel, a fourth-year student of graphic design, crafts and history of the university's arts department.

The other injured -- Rimel, a fourth-year student of Ceramic and Sculpture department -- was rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

The sources added that a truck carrying construction materials ran over their motorcycle at around 8:45pm near Shaheed Habibur Rahman Hall, leaving Himel dead on the spot and Rimel critically injured.

As the news spread, agitating students torched four vehicles including the truck and demonstrated at three different places in the campus protesting the incident.

Simultaneously, around 300-400 students blocked Dhaka-Rajshahi Highway demanding justice for some hours.

Meanwhile, the body of the victim was sent to his village home in Natore for burial after a namaz-e-janaza at RU central jame mosque today.
