UP Election: Two Killed in Satkania Violence

Two people have been killed in violence in the Union Parishad (UP) elections in Chattogram's Satkania upazila. They are a teenager named Tasib (13) in Nalua union of the upazila and Abdus Shukkur (40) in Bajalia union.

The violence erupted on Monday (February 8) morning during the election polls.

Satkania Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Jalil confirmed the matter, saying two people were killed in two separate incidents of electoral violence in Nalua Union and Bajalia Union. One person was killed by a bullet.

He added that police were present at the scene and were trying to bring the situation under control.

Witnesses said Tasib was hacked to death outside the Nalua Union board office around 12 noon today. His father's name is Jasim Uddin. He was in seventh grade. Tasib's uncle Mizanur Rahman is a member candidate of ward no 8.

Mizanur Rahman said followers of the two chairman candidates clashed outside the center. One side hacked Tasib, thinking he was a supporter. He was later taken to Satkania Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.

He further said that my nephew was not even a voter. My rivals should not have any opposition with him. Like others, he came to see the polls. And he had to lose his life.

Meanwhile, Abdus Shukkur, who was shot dead in Bajalia Union of Satkania, is a follower of Tapas Kanti Dutt, the chairman candidate of the boat in this UP.

Satkania Police Station Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Mukibul Hossain said Shukkur was shot at the Bajalolia Board Office Center around 11pm. The incident took place during a clash between supporters of the two candidates. He later died at the hospital.

Earlier, the Election Commission suspended polling at Khagaria Gani Para Government Primary School and Khagaria Union Parishad Center due to clashes between supporters of the two rival chairman candidates.

Chattogram District Election Officer Jahangir Hossain confirmed the postponement.

In addition, in 4th Kanchana UP, in 3rd and 4th wards, supporters of Ramzan Ali and Salam were shot dead. About 20 people were shot.
