The parliamentary committee has opined not to reopen the closed jute mills. They have said that there is no reason for the government to waste money by launching these jute mills.

The matter was discussed at a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Estimated Accounts held at the Parliament House on Monday (February 7). The meeting discussed various projects of the Ministry of Textiles and Jute and the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief.

The committee, meanwhile, suggested that the bridge should be more realistic than a few times wider than the road.

Asked about the meeting, committee chairman Abdus Shahid said projects were taken up for the development of three jute mills. But the government has closed those jute mills. Many questions have been raised about whether the jute mill will be officially launched anew. We have said that it is up to the government to decide whether these will be introduced or not. But we think there is no point in wasting government money by introducing things that are not profitable.

The chairman of the committee said that some projects, though small, have been taken up without feasibility study. We also felt that these would not be effective in the public interest. Although the implementation period of some projects was over, the implementation was not even 5 percent. The ministry also argued. They say the decision was made unnecessarily. We recommend rewards and punishments. We said that if someone is guilty, he should be punished and if someone is doing good deeds, he should be rewarded.

Referring to the ongoing project of construction of bridge culverts on rural roads of the Disaster Management Project, he said that the construction of 15 meters or 45 feet bridge has been mentioned in the project. But where the bridge is, the road is 6 feet. Not being aligned with the road. That is why we have asked the Bureau of Statistics to send a technical report to the committee within two months.

Mentioning that the committee has recommended providing vehicles to the local level officials of the Ministry of Disaster Management, the President said, "If AC Land, UNO, agriculture officials get cars, why don't they get them?" They work all day.

Meanwhile, a press release issued by the Parliament Secretariat said that the meeting was directed to be cautious about the management of the government-run textile mills. Besides, it is recommended to be more careful as the development of weaving industry in different parts of the country is not as expected. Before starting work on an ongoing project, it is advisable to create a proper work plan considering its importance.

As the activities of the Ministry of Disaster and Relief are directly related to the people, it is recommended to be more vigilant about environmental disasters.

Committee Chairman Mohammad Abdus Shahid presided over the meeting. Committee members Nur-e-Alam Chowdhury, Yusuf Abdullah Harun, AB Tajul Islam, Ahsan Adelur Rahman, Wasika Ayesha Khan and Khadijatul Anwar were also present at the meeting.
