One lakh bed sheets with double
pillow covers are being brought from Germany for members of the police force. Police
Chief Dr Benazir Ahmed has been allowed to visit Germany to check the quality
of the products being supplied by a local contractor.
However, such products are made
in Bangladesh and are now being exported to various Asian countries, including
the United States, Australia and Europe. Germany also has a large market for
these products.
IGP Dr Benazir Ahmed is scheduled
to visit Germany this month to verify the acceptability and quality of the
equipment from which the goods will be imported. He is accompanied by Mohammad
Firoz Uddin Khalifa, Deputy Secretary, Public Security Division, Ministry of
Home Affairs, and Mohammad Masud Alam, SP and IGP Staff Officer, Police
Headquarters. They will check the quality before the cover shipment of the
sheets and pillows.
They are scheduled to stay in
Germany for a total of nine days the letter states that they will leave at a
convenient time within the month of February.
The Foreign Secretary has been
given a copy of the letter to issue a note verbal (official letter from one
country to another). Besides, letters have been sent to seven more government
agencies for information and assistance According to the letter, the cost of
the three-person visit to Germany, including the police chief, will be borne by
the contractor.
It is learned that on October 8,
a tender was called from the police headquarters for the supply of double
covers for the bedsheets and pillows. The tender was called for the supply of
21 items including blankets, applets, and hand gloves, bed sheets with double
pillow covers, bed sheets with single pillow covers, body bags and cotton
vests. Among them, bed sheet with the double cover of a pillow is an item.
The tender was also published on
the government's e-Procure website on October 7 Additional DIG of the police
headquarters to call for tenders and accept the goods. Ataul Kibria's name has
been mentioned and by April 28, they have been asked to provide bed sheets with
double pillow covers.
Haider Ali Khan, DIG (Media and
Planning) at the police headquarters, said, "I have nothing to do with it.
However, one of the three IGPs
nominated for the visit, Mohammad Firoz Uddin Khalifa, deputy secretary of the
Home Ministry's public security department, said to the media: "I don't know
much about going to Germany. I have no idea what my job is there. I have
received a letter so far. I have not yet applied for a visa I can't say whether
I will go or not. "
An official at the police headquarters, who did not want to be named, claimed, "The problem with bedsheets in the Bangladeshi market is that the color is not right. The police sheets and pillow covers have a special color that's why it's being brought from Germany. "
