Search Committee Won't Reveal Names of Proposers

The Search Committee will publish all the names that the political parties and individuals submitted to the Cabinet Division, chief of the Search Committee Justice Obaidul Hassan. However, no information will be released about the names of those who have proposed.

Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam told reporters after the third meeting of the search committee with prominent people on Sunday.

He said those among the registered political parties who have not yet submitted their list of names will be able to submit their proposed names for EC formation by 5pm on Monday. Only political parties will get this opportunity. The next meeting of the search committee will be held on Tuesday afternoon.

The third and final meeting of the committee with eminent citizens began in the conference room of the Supreme Court after 4 pm on Sunday.

Prominent educationist Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, cultural personality Nasiruddin Yusuf Bachchu, Golam Qudduch of Sammilita Sangskritik Jote, Lt. Colonel (Retd.) Sajjad Ali Zahir, former Additional IGP Nurul Alam, lyricist and composer Gazi Mazharul Anwar, trustee of Bangladesh Liberation War Museum Mofidul Haque, Sushasoner Jonno Nagorik Secretary Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar, Professor Ainun Nishat, former Election Commissioner Brigadier General (Retd.) M Sakhawat Hossain, economist Kazi Khaliquzzaman Ahmed, Asif Munir of Projannmo-71, Dr. Nuzhat Chowdhury, Professor Muntasir Mamun, writer and journalist Shahriar Kabir, economist Tofail Ahmed were present among others.

Justice Obaidul Hasan, Chief Justice of the Appellate Division, urged BNP to submit the list of names for the appointment of Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners by 5 pm on Monday. The names of everyone who came to the search committee will be published on the website of the cabinet department.

The term of the current Election Commission (EC) ends tomorrow, Monday 14 February. Before that, a new election commission is to be formed. This is the first time since independence that the EC has been formed under the law. On January 27, the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners Appointment Bill-2022 were passed in the Parliament.

An inquiry committee was formed on February 5 to select the person eligible for the EC. The committee will propose 10 names and President will appoint the Chief Election Commissioner and four Election Commissioners from there.
