The search committee has
submitted the names of 10 candidates to President M Abdul Hamid for recommendation on the
appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners.
The President will review the proposed names and appoint the Chief Election
Commissioner and other Election Commissioners, which will be published in the
form of an immediate gazette notification.
Cabinet Secretary Anwarul Islam
told the media after a search committee meeting with the President at
Bangabhaban on Thursday night (February 24).
The cabinet secretary said,
"I have given my name to the president." The name given by the search
committee will not be disclosed. The President will form the commission in a
day or two.
Asked whether the gazette notification
would be issued today, Anwarul Islam said the president would look into the
names and decide on five. Although not today, it will be issued soon.
The term of the last Election
Commission ended on February 14. This is the first time after independence that
the EC is being formed according to the law. For this, on January 27, the
appointment of Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners
Bill-2022 was passed in the Parliament.
On February 5, the President
constituted a six-member inquiry committee headed by Justice Obaidul Hassan of
the Appellate Division to select persons eligible to form the EC as per law.
The committee has been given 15 working days to recommend the names of 10 people.
