The Bangladesh government is considering changes in several important missions abroad. A high-level diplomatic source said changes were being made to missions in Washington DC, New Delhi, Canberra and Geneva.

The decision to appoint new ambassadors to these missions is expected to take effect in the next few months.

Sources said it may take months to complete the process required for the planned changes and nothing has been finalized yet.

If all goes well, Bangladesh's High Commissioner to New Delhi Muhammad Imran could be the next ambassador to the United States and its current ambassador M Shahidul Islam will return to Dhaka. The government-appointed Shahidul Islam, the acting secretary general of BIMSTEC, as ambassador to the United States in September 2020.

In January this year, the government extended the contractual appointment of Muhammad Imran as Bangladesh High Commissioner to India for another three years.

Bangladesh's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Switzerland and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Mohammad Mustafizur Rahman may be appointed as Bangladesh's High Commissioner to India. Bangladesh's High Commissioner to Australia Mohammad Sufiur Rahman could be Bangladesh's ambassador and permanent representative to the UN office in Geneva and other international organizations.
