Elma Chowdhury, a student of Dhaka University’s Department
of Dance, was not murdered. Unable to bear the torture, she committed suicide.
After nearly four months of investigation, the Detective Branch (DB) of the
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has reached this conclusion. DB will file a charge
sheet in the court any day in this case.
Unable to bear the disrespectful behavior of her
husband-in-law and mother-in-law, Elma committed suicide. Her husband,
father-in-law, and mother-in-law persuaded her to commit suicide.
Mashiur Rahman, deputy commissioner of DB's Gulshan
division, told the media, "We have confirmed from digital-forensic
evidence as well as the interrogation of the accused and other witnesses that
Elma has committed suicide. She was persuaded to commit suicide by her husband
Iftekhar Abedin, mother-in-law Shirin Amin and father-in-law Mohammad Amin.
Unable to bear the torture, Elma committed suicide."
Elma's father Saiful Islam Chowdhury said last Saturday
that he had been informed of the progress of the investigation. However, he
still believes that Elma's husband, mother-in-law and father-in-law had staged
a suicide drama after killing her. If DB files a complaint in the court
alleging that his daughter's death was a suicide, he will 'disapprove'.
Elmer, 26, died on December 14 last year, three days after
her expatriate husband Iftekhar Abedin, 35, returned home from Canada. There were
scars on various parts of her body.
