US Citizen Held with 6.8 kg Gold at Dhaka Airport

Customs officials held a Bangladesh-born US citizen with 59 gold bars – weighing around 6.8 kg – at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka this morning.

Detainee Shahnaz Choudhury (54) arrived at Dhaka airport from the US via Dubai, Sazzadul Islam, assistant revenue officer of Customs House, told the media.

A customs (preventive) team intercepted her around 8:40 am at the boarding bridge-7 area and found gold bars hidden inside belts wrapped around her waist, he said.

The value of the gold is around Tk five crore, the official said, adding they did not find any Bangladeshi passport with her. 

The woman, during primary interrogation, claimed she carried the gold from the US but customs officials suspect that someone handed the gold bars to her in Dubai.

The filing of a case is underway in this regard.
