Traffic Normal, No Shops Open in New Market Today

The situation on the Mirpur road has remained calm today, Wednesday (April 20) after the clash between the students of Dhaka College and the traders of New Market in the capital on Tuesday, April 19. Although traffic in the area was normal from the morning, shops in New Market and surrounding markets remained closed.

The clashes took place on Tuesday all day long after the dispute between the Dhaka College students and New Market businessmen and shop employees sparked on Monday (April 18) night in the capital’s New Market area. 

A pedestrian named Nahid Hossain, 20, who was injured in the clashes died last night while undergoing treatment. Many were injured in the clashes.

Meanwhile, traders in New Market are preparing to open shops. Besides, members of the law enforcement forces have been seen in the area.

Noted that, on Monday night, some students of Dhaka College had been involved in an altercation with the staff of a food shop in New Market. Later, the traders and shopkeepers of New Market got involved in clashes with the students of Dhaka College in the middle of the night. Police later fired tear gas and rubber bullets to control the situation. The clash lasted till 2:30 am.

The incident sparked clashes between the two sides on Tuesday morning. In the afternoon, the police came and threw tear gas, however, the situation was not calm down. 

The students of Dhaka College were instructed to leave the dormitory in the afternoon but they did not do so. The students are standing in front of the college till 8:45 pm. On the other hand, traders are also taking position near New Market. Police have been deployed in the area to control the situation.
