Three cases have been registered
in connection with the clash between Dhaka College students and traders in the New Market
area of the capital and 700 unidentified persons have been accused in the
cases.
The cases were registered on
Wednesday night (April 20), said New Market Police Station SI Shah Alam.
Among the three cases, New Market
Police Station SI Mehedi Hasan and Inspector (Investigation) Yamin Kabir have
filed two cases alleging explosion, rioting, arson and obstruction of police
work. Deliveryman Nahid Miah's family, who was killed in the clash, filed
another case alleging murder.
SI Shah Alam said all the accused
in the case are unknown. 150 to 200 accused in Mehedi Hasan's case, 200 to 300
accused in Yamin Kabir's case and 150 to 200 accused in Nahid murder case.
Last Monday (April 18) evening, a
clash broke out between the students of Dhaka College at around 12 pm due to an
argument between the employees of two shops near Gate No. 4 of New Market.
Nahid Mia, a courier service worker, was killed and more than 50 others,
including a journalist, were injured in the clashes.
Nahid worked as a delivery
assistant at a store called Data Tech Computer on Elephant Road. He died on
Tuesday night while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College.
A shop worker named Mursalin, who
was hit by a brick in the clash on Tuesday, also died while undergoing
treatment on Thursday morning. No case has been registered in this regard yet.
Meanwhile, shops in the New
Market area reopened today after being closed for two days due to clashes. The
decision was taken on the basis of consensus among all parties accepting the
logical demands of the students, said Prof Nehal Ahmed, Director General,
Department of Secondary and Higher Education.
