A Dhaka court has granted a three-day remand to BNP leader
Mokbul Hossain in a case filed in connection with an attack on police during a
clash between businessmen and students of Dhaka College in New Market.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mamunur Rashid granted the remand on Saturday (April 23).
Earlier, Mokbul was produced in court. Newmarket Police
Inspector Haldar Arpit Thakur then requested to remand him for seven days for
proper investigation of the case. After the hearing, the Dhaka Metropolitan
Magistrate granted remand for 3 days.
Mokbul is the number one accused in the case filed against
him for attacking the police on the day of the clash in New Market. He is the
former president of New Market Thana BNP. He has two shops in the market.
Police are claiming that the clash started in that shop.
Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) police arrested
former BNP president Mokbul Hossain from Dhanmondi in the capital on Friday
(April 22) afternoon in a case filed by police in connection with the clash.
After his arrest, he was brought to the DB office on Minto Road for
questioning.
Although Mokbul has pleaded not guilty, police say he provoked the clash.
Earlier, on Monday (April 18) at around 12 pm, the clash
between the students of Dhaka College and the traders and employees of New
Market started. The clash lasted for about two and a half hours. After that, the
situation was under control at night but the clashes started again after 10 am
on Tuesday. Which lasts until evening.
More than half a hundred people from both sides were injured
in the incident and are being treated at the hospital. Some of them are in
critical condition. In addition, two people died in the incident while
undergoing treatment. One of them is a deliveryman, the other is a shop
employee.
Police have filed two cases in connection with the clash
between Dhaka College students and traders in the New Market area. One was charged
under the Explosives Act and the other with assault on police. A total of 1,200
people, including traders, employees, and students of Dhaka College, were
accused in the two cases.
