Garment workers vandalize a Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) vehicle in front of the Shaheed Suhrawardy Indoor Stadium in Mirpur. They also set fire to two police motorcycles.

The incident took place around 5:30 pm on Saturday (June 4).

Mirpur Zone Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADC) Mohammad Mahbub confirmed the matter. He said there was no BGB member in the vehicle at the time of the vandalism.

In this regard, Inspector (Investigation) of Pallabi Police Station Mohammad Asad said that the workers of some factories have been protesting sporadically since morning. In the afternoon, some more factory workers blocked the road demanding higher wages. Later in the afternoon, as the blockade was coming to an end, they vandalized an empty BGB bus. They also set fire to two police motorcycles.

Asked how many people have been detained in the incident, he said some have been detained so far. However, that number cannot be said right now.

Earlier, garment workers blocked the road in Mirpur to protest against the rising cost of living.

At around 12 noon, workers of some garment factories at Mirpur-13 came down to the road. They demanded that either the salary should be increased or the prices of daily necessities should be reduced.
