Over 60 Victims of Ctg Depot Fire Suffer Eye Injuries

At least 63 victims of the fiery explosions at Sitakunda’s BM Container Depot in Chattogram have suffered eye injuries from the blast, reports media.  

Among them, six people have severe blast injuries to their eyes, Ophthalmologist Prof Md Nurul Haque told reporters at the Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Tuesday.

He added that these patients need to be sent to Dhaka for better treatment.

Apart from these six patients, five others also sustained serious eye injuries but cannot be transported to Dhaka because they must first receive treatment for their burn injuries at the CMCH for at least seven days, the medical expert also added.

“Determining whether chemical injuries can cause long-term complications takes six to seven days on average. We can't guarantee anything because we don't know what chemical caused their injuries,” said Prof Md Nurul.

Meanwhile, the Army said that the fire at the depot has been brought under control, but that it has not yet been completely extinguished.

There is no risk of any further explosions, said Lieutenant Colonel Ariful Islam Himel at a briefing on the spot at 11:30am on Tuesday.

An explosion took place at BM Container Depot in Sitakunda on Saturday (June 4) night.

At least 43 people, including members of the fire service, were killed.

Hundreds of people have been injured and are being treated at various hospitals. So far, the identities of 25 out of 43 victims have been determined.
