Army personnel have rescued about 100 passengers, including 21 students of Dhaka University (DU) stranded in Surma river in Sunamganj. This was reported by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Sunday (June 19) morning.

Earlier, the engine of the Kopotakkho-Anirban launch carrying about 100 passengers including DU students to Sylhet conked out  after it reached the middle of Surma river. As a result, they were trapped in the river.

One of the survivors, Tareq Rahman, a student of DU's Mass Communication and Journalism Department, wrote in his Facebook post, "We are all safe now. The Bangladesh Army rescued us. We are now staying in Gobindganj camp. Soon we will leave for Sylhet under the supervision of the army. '

Earlier, Shoaib Ahmed, a student of DU's Mass Communication and Journalism Department, said that the Kopotaksh-Anirban launch left Sunamganj for Sylhet with about 100 passengers including 36 DU students this morning. But when it reached the Duarbazar area of Surma river in Sunamganj, three engines of the launch broke down. Later the launch got stuck in the middle of the river.

On June 14, 21 students of DU were trapped in the flood while traveling from the university campus to Sunamganj. Later, on the initiative of Sunamganj district administration, they were rescued from Pansi restaurant and taken to the district police lines on Friday afternoon.
