The water level of the river
Jamuna continues to rise due to steep slopes and heavy rains coming down from
the upper reaches. As a result, the water of the river Jamuna is flowing at two
points in Sirajganj.
In the last 12 hours, the water
of Jamuna has increased by 9 cm at Kazipur point of the district and is flowing
over 36 cm of danger zone. Besides, in the last 12 hours, water of Jamuna river
has increased by 11 cm in the Sirajganj town protection dam area and is flowing
over 33 cm of danger zone. As the new and lower reaches of the Jamuna Char are
being flooded, the people along the river are also fearing floods.
The matter was confirmed by
Sirajganj Water Development Board (WDB) Deputy Assistant Engineer Zakir Hossain
and Sirajganj Water Development Board (WDB) Water Surveyor Hasanur Rahman on
Monday (June 20) morning.
WDB 's deputy assistant engineer
said that in the last 12 hours (from 6 pm on June 19 to 6 am on June 20) at
Kazipur point of the district, the danger level has increased by 9 cm and is
flowing over 37 cm.
He added that the water level of
Jamuna at Kazipur point of the district was recorded at 15.53 meters on June 19
at 6 pm. At present the water level has been recorded at 15.62 meters. Here the
water level is 15.25 meters. As a result, the water at this point is flowing
over the danger zone of 37 cm.
Meanwhile, as a result of the
increase in water, the water level in the inland rivers is also increasing. The
chars and lowlands of the Jamuna are gradually being flooded. As a result,
floods and erosion have spread fear among the people of the char areas. Various
crops are being destroyed by drowning in these areas. However, the Water
Development Board said it was ready to deal with the situation.
WDB water meter Rahman said the
water level in the hard point area of the city was recorded at 13.68 meters
in the morning. Earlier, the water level was recorded at 13.57 meters at 6 pm
yesterday. The danger level here is 13.35 meters. As a result, water is flowing
at 33 cm above the danger level at this point.
He added that as the water level
in the Teesta continues to rise, it is expected that the water level in the
Jamuna will rise for a few more days. As a result, Sirajganj may be flooded.
As a result of continuous rise in
water for about two weeks, the low lying lands of the Jamuna chars have started
submerging. As a result, along with the Jamuna, the lower and char areas of
Chalanbil including Phuljor, Karatoya, Baral and Ichhamati have started
flooding. In the meantime, due to flooding of vast crop lands, various growing
crops including raw jute, sesame, kaun, nuts and vegetables are being wasted.
The farmers are facing financial loss.
