Thousands of travellers suffered immensely while reaching home to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha with their near and dear ones due to a 25km long tailback created on the Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu Bridge Highway Friday, reports media.

Eid-ul-Azha, one of the biggest festivals for Muslims, will be celebrated across the country on July 10.

Passengers and the transport workers were facing uncertainty to reach their destination in time while waiting in long queued bumper-to-bumper traffic congestion that stretched from the eastern end of Bangabandhu Bridge to the Tangail Bypass under Sadar Upazila.

Idris Ali, a microbus driver, said it took him five hours to reach Tangail from Savar. “Now the Almighty only knows when I will reach Bogura.”

Due to the tailbacks, women and children particularly suffered severely amid the scorching heat.

Bangabandhu Bridge east police station Officer-in-Charge Shafiqul Islam said there was heavy pressure of increased number of vehicles on the highway.

Besides, the authorities of Bangabandhu Bridge suspended toll collection for more than one hour and a half due to an accident at the western end of the bridge in the early hours of Friday, which caused long tailbacks.

They were working to normalise the traffic movement, he added.
