Death of BUET Student: 15 Placed on 3-Day Remand

A Dhaka court today (July 16, 2022) placed 15 people on a three-day remand each in a case filed over the death of Tarikuzzaman Sunny (26), a student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).

The accused are Shariful Hossain (31), Shakil Ahmed (30), Sezan Ahmed (30), Mohammad Rubel (37), Md Sajib (33), Mohammad Nuruzzaman (38), Md Nasir (37), Md Maruf (32), Md Ashraful Alam (28), Md Jahangir Hossain Ripon (46), Mohammad Noman (32), Mohammad Jahid (32), ATM Shahriar Momin (30), Md Maruful Haque (34) and Rokonuzzaman Jitu (28).

Senior Judicial Magistrate Kazi Ashrafuzzaman passed the order after Md Shamsul Alam, a Sub-Inspector of Kutubpur Navy Outpost under Dohar Police Station and also the investigation officer of the case, produced them before it with a seven-day remand prayer.

In the remand prayer, the IO said at around 3:30pm on July 14 the accused tactfully called Sunny out of his house to visit Moinot Ghat of the Padma River and pushed the victim into the river and since then the victim went missing.

Following the incident, the accused called the police on 999 to save themselves. The police came and informed the fire service. The rescue operation started that night. The fire service team recovered the victim's body yesterday. The accused need to be remanded to gather vital clues from them about the killing and to know whereabouts of others involved with the incident, the IO added.

Defence for the accused submitted a petition seeking bail along with cancellation of the remand on grounds that the accused were not involved with the incident.

Upon hearing both the sides, the magistrate turned down the defence plea and placed them on remand in the case.

Victim's elder brother Md Hasanuzzaman filed a case with Dohar Police Station in this connection.

Sunny went missing in the Padma river at Moinot Ghat area of Dohar in Dhaka at around 8:30pm on July 14 while taking a selfie.

Citing locals, a diver of fire service and civil defence said 16 friends including Sunny came to visit Moinot Ghat on Thursday (July 14) evening. Sunny slipped and fell while taking a selfie on a dredger machine. At that time, his friends tried to rescue him but failed. They called the police on 999. The police came and informed the fire service. The rescue operation started at night.
