Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury said that India has shown
interest in using Mongla and Chattogram ports as an alternative to Singapore
and Colombo.
He said
this to reporters after meeting with India's High Commissioner Vikram K
Doraiswami in Dhaka on Thursday (July 21).
The
state minister said, 'India wants to use Mongla and Chattogram ports as an
alternative to Singapore and Colombo ports. Action will be taken in this regard
only after getting clearance from NBR.
He also
said that there are many issues in the shipping sector between the two
countries. Due to coronavirus and other reasons some things have slowed down.
The meeting discussed about taking them forward. Dredging of various waterways,
use of Chattogram and Mongla ports, use of Visakhapatnam and Krishnapatnam
ports in India, introduction of immigration system at Ramgarh land port of
Khagrachari were discussed.
