HC Rules Over Decision of Suspending Gazipur City Mayor Zahangir

The High Court (HC) today issued a rule asking authorities concerned to explain as to why it shall not declare the decision of suspending Gazipur City Corporation Mayor Mohammad Zahangir Alam, illegal.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice Zafar Ahmed and Justice Md Akhtaruzzaman passed the order after holding hearing on a writ filed by Zahangir.

Senior jurist Barrister Rokon Uddin Mahmud and Advocate Mohammad Belayet Hossain moved the writ, filed on August 14, before the court. Attorney General AM Amin Uddin took part in the hearing for the state.

The court asked officials including LGRD Secretary, Law Secretary and Gazipur Deputy Commissioner to reply within two weeks.

The Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Ministry on November 25, 2021, suspended Jahangir Alam from the post of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) Mayor for conducting a fair investigation into the allegations like embezzlement of government funds and land grabbing, against him.
