Inciting Daughter to ‘Commit Suicide’: Father Shaheen Remanded

A Dhaka court today has granted a one-day remand to father Shaheen Islam, who is accused in the case of inciting her daughter Sanjana Mosaddek, 21, who is also a student at BRAC University, to commit suicide by jumping from the 10th-floor roof at Dakshinkhan in the capital.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shuvra Chakraborty granted the remand order on Thursday (September 01) after Sub-Inspector of Dakshinkhan Police Station Rezia Khatun, also the investigation officer of the case, produced the accused before the court with seven-day remand.

On this day, the arrested accused Shaheen was produced before the court by the police. Later, the investigating officer sub-inspector (SI) Rezia Khatun appealed to remand him for seven days in view of a proper investigation of the case. Following the petition, the court granted Shaheen a one-day remand.

Earlier, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Shaheen Islam from Mymensingh’s Gafargaon on Wednesday (August 31) morning.

Shaheen had gone into hiding since his 21-year-old daughter allegedly jumped off a building and died.

Sanjana, a seventh semester student of the English department at the Brac University, allegedly committed suicide by jumping from a 10-storey building’s rooftop at Dakshinkhan’s Mollarhat area on Saturday afternoon (August 27). Following this, her mother Umme Salma filed a case in this connection.

Before killing herself, Sanjana wrote a suicide note that reads – “My father is responsible for my death. It is possible to live with even animals but not with an inhuman. He is an abusive rapist who did not even spare housemaids. With me begins his tormenting fate.”

It is learned that Sanjana’s father Shaheen Alam got married a second time five years ago without informing them. When the matter came to light, tension arose between the two families. Then Sanjana’s mother divorced her husband two months ago. After that, Shaheen Alam stopped paying expenses, including the semester fees for the university, of Sanjana.
