The
Election Commission (EC) has approved a new project for the use of Electronic
Voting Machines (EVMs) in the 12th National elections on Monday (September 19).
This
approval was given in a meeting of the Election Commission on Monday.
According
to the EC, the potential cost of the project has been estimated at Tk 8,711
crore for the purchase of about two lakh new EVMs and the use of EVMs in all
150 seats.
At
the end of the commission's meeting, the Election Commissioner said. Alamgir said
in the press conference that the EVM project planned for the 12th National elections
has been approved. The rest of the activities will be started after getting clearance from the Ministry of Finance.
Election
Commissioner Ahsan Habib Khan served as acting CEC in today's meeting of the
commission. The remaining three commissioners and other officials including the
EC secretary were present.
Earlier,
a proposal regarding the EVM project was raised in the commission meeting last
week, but the meeting was adjourned that day without any decision.
