Ekushey Padak winning journalist and language soldier Ranesh Maitra has passed away.

He breathed his last at Popular Hospital in the capital in the early hours of Monday, reports UNB.

Ranesh Maitra left behind his wife Puravi Maitra, two sons, three daughters, and a host of well-wishers. Puravi Maitra is also a brave freedom fighter.

Maitra was born in 1933 in Rajshahi. He got his matriculation certificate from Gopal Chandra Institution in 1950. Later, he completed his IA in 1955 and BA in 1959 from Govt Edward College in Pabna.

Veteran left-wing politician Ranesh Maitra, also one of the organizers of the great liberation war, was a bold columnist as well as a politician. His writings were against injustice, lawlessness, corruption, social discrimination and communalism. He was the founding secretary of Pabna Press Club.

His political life started with Chhatra Union. He later joined the pro-Moscow NAP.
