Case Filed against Babul Akhtar, Elias under ICT Act

Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) chief Additional IGP Banaj Kumar Majumder has filed a case against Babul Akhtar and journalist Elias Hossain under the Digital Security Act and Special Powers Act for providing and spreading false information in the Mitu murder case.

PBI Dhaka Metro North Superintendent of Police (SP) Jahangir Alam filed a complaint with the Dhanmondi Police Station on Tuesday evening on behalf of the plaintiff Banaj Kumar Majumder. Later, it was registered as a case.

Confirming the matter, Dhanmondi Police Station OC Md. Ikram Ali Mia said there was a talk with PBI chief Banaj Kumar Majumder. PBI Dhaka Metro North SP Jahangir Alam brought the chargesheet to the police station on his behalf. The chargesheet has been registered as a “case”. Police Inspector (Investigation) Rabiul Islam has been given the charge of investigating the case.

PBI Headquarters Additional Superintendent of Police Abu Yusuf said that the accused are Elias Hossain, 48, former Superintendent of Police Md. Babul Akhtar, 46, his brother Md. Habibur Rahman Labu, 45, and their father Md. Abdul Wadud Mia, 72.

Earlier, expatriate journalist Elias Hossain released a video from his YouTube channel about the investigation into the Mitu murder case. In that video, it is said that Babul Akhtar was “deliberately framed” by PBI chief Banaj Kumar Majumder in this case. He was also tortured on remand. There are also allegations of perjury.

On June 5, 2016, Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, wife of Babul Akhter, was shot and stabbed by miscreants on her way to drop off her son to the school bus at Nizam Road in Chattogram city. At that time, this incident was widely discussed throughout the country. At the time of the incident, Mitu’s husband, then Superintendent of Police Babul Akhtar, was staying in Dhaka. After the incident, he returned to Chattogram and filed a murder case against unanimous with Panchlaish police station.

In the case filed by Babul Akhtar, PBI found his involvement in Mitu’s murder.

Then on the day of submission of the final report in the previous case on May 12 last year, Mitu’s father, former police inspector Mosharraf Hossain, filed a case with Panchlaish police station in Chattogram city, making Babul Akhter the main accused. On the same day, PBI arrested Babul and sent him to court. Since then, he is in prison. 

Currently, PBI is investigating these two cases.

Meanwhile, Babul Akhtar filed a lawsuit against 6 police officers including Banaj Kumar Majumder after the release of the video of Elias. However, the court rejected the petition for the case._Agencies
