The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has submitted a probe report clearing all eight accused, including Bashundhara Group Managing Director Sayem Sobhan Anvir, of charges in a case filed over the rape and murder of college student Mosarrat Jahan Munia in April 2021.
PBI Inspector Golam Muktar Ashraf Uddin submitted the final report to the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Begum Yeasmin Ara on Wednesday.
Earlier, the probe report submission was deferred several times as the PBI failed to conclude its investigation.
On September 6, 2021, Munia’s elder sister Nusrat Jahan Tania filed the case with Dhaka’s Eighth Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal against Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, his son and Managing Director Sayem Sobhan Anvir, and six others.
Other accused are Bashundhara chairman’s wife Afroza Akter, Anvir’s wife Sabrina Sobhan, showbiz models Faria Mahbub Piasha and Saifa Rahman Mim, and Ibrahim Ahmed Ripon and his wife Sharmim Akhter.
After an initial hearing, Judge Mafruza Parveen asked Gulshan police to accept the allegations as an FIR.
Tania earlier filed a case accusing Anvir of abetting the suicide of Munia.
A Dhaka court cleared Anvir of the charges on August 18, 2021 after holding a hearing on the police’s final report. The court also rejected the no-confidence petition filed by the plaintiff.
Police recovered Munia’s body hanging from a ceiling fan in her flat in Gulshan on April 26, 2021.
The duo had been in a relationship for around two years and Anvir used to visit Munia’s flat in Gulshan regularly, the police said after a preliminary investigation._Agencies
