Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen said that the junta government of Myanmar is willing to take back the Rohingyas through the mediation of China. Myanmar could not say anything about when the repatriation of Rohingyas will start. However, preparations are underway on how Rohingyas will be received in the first phase.

He said these things after meeting with the Chinese ambassador to Bangladesh, Li Jiming, on Thursday (October 20).

It is to be noted that the Chinese Ambassador's meeting with Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen was held at the State Guest House Padma shortly after 11 am today. Senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and representatives of the Chinese Embassy were present.

At a recent event, Ambassador Jiming indicated that he was going to formally present the 'results' with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka based on what he had discussed with the Myanmar side.

Despite Myanmar's assurances, the country has not taken back a single Rohingya in the last five years. Bangladesh is sheltering more than 1.1 million Rohingya in Cox's Bazar and Bhasanchar.

Last October 13, China's ambassador said that the core of the Rohingya issue is not the unilateral efforts of a particular country but building trust among stakeholders.

He said that since both Bangladesh and Myanmar are China's friendly neighbors, China is working to help resolve the Rohingya issue through dialogue.

The ambassador said that although the current internal situation in Myanmar is still uncertain, communication between the two sides has not been interrupted by the "mediation of China" and in fact the current Myanmar authorities are showing a positive attitude in this regard.
