Bhola Markets Abuzz With Fishermen amid Huge Hilsha Catches

Huge hilsa netted from the Meghna estuary have flooded the ghats, mokams and wholesale fish markets of the district.

Fishermen resumed fishing since last midnight as the 22-day ban on catching, selling, transportation and hoarding of the delicious hilsa ends on Friday midnight.

Like previous years, the government has imposed a 22-day ban starting from October 7 on catching, selling, storing and transporting Hilsha, to ensure safe spawning of the Mother Hilsha, during its peak breeding period.

On the very first day, the fishermen were happy to catch a lot of fish including hilsa in their nets.

Huge fish was netted in Tulatuli and Majhi Fish Ghat areas of Sadar Upazila in Meghna Par and Nashir Magi ghat.

Jalaluddin and Faizullah, fishermen of Tulatuli area, said that they went to the river with fishing trawlers and got about 70 kg of hilsa which were sold at Taka 35 thousand.

Trader Al Amin of Meghna Fish ghat said that a lot of hilsa fish have arrived at the ghat since this morning. Around 300 to 500 grams of these fish are being sold at Taka 800 to 900 while 600 to 900 grams are being sold at Taka 2000 to 2500.

District Fisheries Officer Molla Emdadullah told BSS that there are 60 small and big fish ghats in the district. As the ban ends last night, all the ghats have become crowded with fishermen.
