Man Jailed for 13Yrs for Attacking Ghoraghat UNO

A court here today sentenced one person to 13 years of imprisonment in a case lodged over attacks on Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Ghoraghat Wahida Khanam and her father Omar Ali Sheikh.

Judge Sadia Sultana of Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-3 and Special tribunal-4 handed down the verdict this morning in presence of Rabiul Islam, 35, the sole accused of the case, and a resident of Birol upazila in Dinajpur district.

The court also fined him Tk 13,000, in default, to suffer nine months more in jail.

According to the case, Ghoraghat UNO Wahida Khanam and her father were attacked by some unidentified miscreants at her official residence at Ghoraghat in the wee hours of September 3, 2020.

They were taken to Rangpur Medical College and, later, to National Neuroscience Hospital in Dhaka by air ambulance.

Police inspector Sheikh Farid, Wahida's brother, filed a case with Ghoraghat police station. Later, the case was handed over to the Detective Branch (DB) of police.

On September 11, DB police arrested former gardener Rabiul, who was temporarily suspended over theft allegations from the upazila parishad in January 2020.
