The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has upheld the High Court order that private universities will not have to pay income tax for the time being.

An eight-member HC bench, led by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, pronounced the verdict on Thursday (April 6), rejecting the review petition.

Senior lawyer A. F. Hassan Ariff and Barrister Omar Sadat moved for the writ petition while Attorney General AM Amin Uddin and Additional Attorney General Sheikh Mohammad Morshed represented the state during the hearing in the court.

Fifteen per cent income tax on private universities was proposed in the budget for the 2021-22 fiscal. Later, the owners of different private universities filed writs challenging the government decision. Then, the High Court stayed the decision. The government filed an appeal challenging the HC order which is upheld by the apex court today.
