Veteran freedom fighter and Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Zafrullah Chowdhury breathed his last on Tuesday.

Gonoshasthaya Kendra Nagar chief executive officer Monjur Kader Ahmed confirmed that Zafrullah died at 11: 15pm while undergoing treatment at Gonoshasthaya Kendra in Dhaka, reports media.

Zafrullah's health deteriorated on Monday, and he has been on life support ever since.

On April 7, Zafrullah Chowdhury was extremely unwell and was sent to Gonoshasthaya Kendra Hospital.

Zafrullah had been suffering from kidney diseases and lately developed old age-related health complications.

He was under the treatment of Mamun Mustafi, head of the nephrology department at Gonoshasthaya Samaj Vittik Medical College.

Zafrullah obtained his MBBS degree from Dhaka Medical College in 1966 and a master’s degree in public health from Johns Hopkins University in the United States.

He established Bangladesh Field Hospital with his colleagues to treat the injured freedom fighters and soldiers during the War of Independence of Bangladesh in 1971.

After independence, he founded Gonoshasthaya Kendra in 1972 to provide healthcare services to underprivileged communities in Bangladesh.
