Lalmonirhat flood situation is worsening

Teesta water flowing 40 cm above danger level

The water in the Teesta river is increasing daily. For the flowing upstream of the river already 20 thousand families of 5 upazilas including Hatibandha, Patgram, Aditmari, Sadar of Lalmonirhat district are floating in the water of Ban. The water is increasing since Friday morning. As a result, New villages are sinking. In this moment Water is flowing 40 cm above the danger level at the barrage point. 

Meanwhile, there is no relief among the flooded people. 50 thousand displaced people of this area are lamenting for lack of relief. 

The families of various flood affected areas including Khuniagach, Kalmati, Rajpur, Godrimari, Parulia, Dauabari, Mahishkhocha have left their homes and taken shelter on higher ground. 

About the situation Khuniagach Union Parishad Chairman Khairuzzaman Badal said that 3,000 families in his union are waterlogged. Abu Bakkar Siddique, chairman of Godrimari UP in Hatibandha, said that 4,000 families in that union are water-tight. However, the UP chairmen said that there was a food crisis due to non-allocation among the flood affected families.

If dry food is not given quickly, it wil be a massive crisis among the affected families.

Meanwhile Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ullah said that 103 metric tons of rice and cash have been allotted to the flood victims. It would might be distributed since day after tomorrow (Sunday).

The executive engineer of the Water Development Board said that the Teesta water may rise further. The flood water is going towards Gaibandha, Bogra, Sirajganj districts.
